Here we've listed some of our favourite places to visit in order of distance from La Porcherie.

Places to Visit

Piegut

The Wednesday morning market in Piegut is famous for its size, atmosphere and variety.

If you're here on a Wednesday, it's well worth a visit!

Distance: 12km / 12 mins

Rochechouart

This lovely market town has great restaurants and a magnificent chateau that hosts contemporary art exhibitions.

Distance: 19km / 19 mins

Grotte de Villars

13km of caves have been discovered at Villars. You can explore a small section, which has been inhabited by people and bears and see some incredibly well-preserved prehistoric paintings.

Distance: 40km / 45 mins

Saint Jean-de-Côle

This beautiful little village is well worth a visit - it has a chateau (visits must be arranged in advance) an impressive church and charming restaurants.

A visit can be tied in with Brantôme, about 20 minutes away.

Bourdeilles

Not one, but two chateaus set within this stunning village. The riverbank is a lovely spot for a picnic before or after visiting the chateau, and there are some little restaurants in the village too.

Distance: 53km /50 minutes

Chateau de La Rochefoucauld

A pretty chateau in a lovely town with some great restaurants. The library, kept locked (wait for the guide to appear) is beautiful.

Distance: 36km / 35 mins

Hautefort

A magnificent chateau that sits above a stunning village with some lovely restaurants (and a funny little medical museum).

Hautefort is a popular destination so we recommend, if possible, booking a restaurant in advance in summer.

Nontron

Nontron is famous for its knives, and there's the opportunity to visit the small knife factory where each piece is still made by hand by one person.

There's also a huge knife fair in August.

Limoges

The centre of Limoges is beautiful and there is always something happening in this vibrant city, famous for its porcelain and enamel. You'll find large stores and lots of ams independents to browse and the train station has been voted the most beautiful in France.

Thiviers

Another pretty market town with a bustling market.

Market day is Saturday morning.

Distance: 46km /48 minutes

Brantome

Another beautiful town with a magnificent abbey (you can't visit most of it but you can visit the 'caves' behind or take a boat trip down the river.

Market day is Friday morning.

Distance: 45km /45 minutes

Angoulême

Not as many shops as Limoges, but the old city and ramparts are worth wandering round.

Distance: 61km /60 minutes

Périgueux

A bit of a drive but well worth the trip! The old part of Périgueux is stunning with lovely small shops, an impressive cathedral, great restaurants - and even a house on stilts (sort of).

Distance: 70km /70 minutes

Aubeterre-sur-Dronne

This stunning village is worth the drive. It's home to the incredible monolithic church of Saint-Jean, great potteries, boutique shops and some nice bars and restaurants.
