Markets!
Here you’ll find details of all our local markets, including the fabulous weekly street market at Piegut, featured in a recent blogpost.
Distance: 15 -30 minutes.
Rochechouart
Rochechouart is a lovely little town. The impressive chateau dominates the town and houses contemporary (and sometimes baffling) art installations that change regularly.
There’s a small selection of nice shops, including an excellent deli, gift and flower shops, a good butcher and a good wine merchant. There’s also a supermarket (Intermarche) and a couple of great hardware stores (Roberts on the way in, sells everything!).
There’s one of our favourite restaurants too, Hotel De France, which we review here.

Nontron
Nontron is a lovely little town with a few shops. It’s most famous for the manufacture of knives, which are made entirely by hand to this day in the little factory, which you can visit. There are also a couple of knife shops in the town centre (one linked to the factory). A knife fair in August brings all the local craftsmen from the region together to market their wares where the array of penknives and hunting knives on sale (and some of the prices) is astounding.

Brantôme
Brantôme is a beautiful city to visit. The city centre is built on an island formed by the River Dronne. There is a nice range of small shops and some lovely restaurants. There is a market on Friday mornings (which is best visited in summer).
The Saint Pierre Abbey dominates one side of the main river and it’s possible to visit the caves behind it, which was once inhabited by monks and where the origins of Brantôme lie.

Limoges
The centre of Limoges is beautiful and there is always something happening in this vibrant city, famous for its porcelain and enamel. There are the big stores like Galerie Lafayette, Monoprix and FNAC and a fabulous array of small independent stores.
There are some fantastic locations for lunch too - from fabulous cheap eats in the indoor market, to one of our favourite restaurants, Martin Comptoir, which we’ve reviewed here.
